The Virtual Summer Learning Institute (SLI) is an intensive institute designed for Umoja Community program faculty and staff. The training focuses on immersing attendees in the philosophy, pedagogy, theoretical foundations, and best practices based on the Umoja Community model. Educators from California Community Colleges have the opportunity to engage in courageous and bold discussions with other Umoja Community program staff. Participants are encouraged to attend as a college team, as they are given the opportunity to discuss and refine their programs based on information learned at the institute. Examples of the content presented at the SLI include program structure and implementation, elements of African customs and rituals, and cultural applications for teaching English, math, and college success/guidance courses.
Here are our goals for the SLI:
1. We will strengthen our Umoja Power Base through collaboration. This virtual event will include Umoja Planning Cafes. The planning cafes are informal learning spaces for practitioners and teams to build community and engage with others about strategies and effective practices for supporting Umoja students’ success.
2. We will uplift student voices through our data collection to inform our continued work. We will review the practices for integrating data review and processing for administrators, coordinators, and campus leadership.
3. We will identify critical campus opportunities and challenges and work to create the optimal Black student experience.
What is a Planning Cafe'?: The planning café is an informal learning space for practitioners and teams to build community and engage with others about strategies and effective practices for supporting Umoja student success.
